Oluseyi Oduntan
OTUNBA OSIGADE OF IJEBU
Oluseyi Adelaja Oduntan (Seyi) was born into a deeply committed Christian royal family. His father was the late Otunba B. A. Oduntan, the late Otunba Osigade of Iworo Ijebu and also the Baba Oba of Iworo Ijebu who was, until he retired from service, a Permanent Secretary in the Old Western Region. His Grandfather was the Late Pa J.T. Oduntan a Prince of the Oliworo ruling house. Seyi’s paternal grandmother, the late Princess Dorcas Adesola Oduntan, (nee Adeyemi of Ipamuren) was from the Funsengbuwa/Tunwase Ruling House of Ijebu Ode. Seyi’s mother, the later Princess E.O. Oduntan, who was the daughter of the late Oba S. A. Odukoya, the Olowu of Owu Ijebu. Seyi’s maternal Grandmother also hailed from the royal family in Oke Agbo, Ijebu Igbo.
Seyi Oduntan, the Otunba Osigade of Ijebu, was born in Ibadan and grew up in the Oke Ado area of the city. He started ICC Primary school, Oke Bola, but finished his primary school Education at Ebenezer African Church School, Oke Ado. He proceeded to Government College Ibadan and then, Comprehensive High School Aiyetoro for his Higher School Certificate (HSC) Examination. He worked briefly with the Western Nigeria Marketing Board before proceeding to the United Kingdom for further education and graduated with B.sc (Hons) in Business Studies from the University of Huddersfield, England. He is a Member and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, UK.
Seyi returned to Nigeria and joined the West African Distilleries, as a youth corper in 1981 but was quickly absorbed into the company as an Assistant Marketing Manager.
Seyi soon joined his mentor and guide, Oba Otudeko, at the fast growing Honeywell Group as a Commercial Manager in Metropolitan Trust Nigeria Limited, a fully owned subsidiary of the company. Contributing to the raging success of the Honeywell group through the 1980’s and 90’s, Seyi rose to become the General Manager and later the Managing Director of the company at a very young age of 35.
After 14 years of meritorious service, he resigned to form Lanrope Group of companies; a highly diversified group with interests in diesel and solar energy, international trade, and finance. Seyi was invited by his friend, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, to Chair Western Publishing Company. This resulted in the birth of the Nigerian Compass newspaper, which became the leading newspaper in the country at that time. He became the pioneer Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the company for two years before stepping aside to return to his business ventures. Shortly after, he was appointed and, served as the Senior Technical Adviser to The Minister of Defense, where he served until a change of Administration in 2011.
As a hallmark of his versatility and brilliance, Seyi has served as Chairman or Director in various public and private institutions including the Ogun State owned Gateway Pharmaceuticals company ltd; Director, Citadel Savings and Loans Ltd (where he was co-founder); Director, Forest City Ltd (UK); Chairman, SG Services Limited – an Oil Servicing Company with Foreign affiliation for Project Management and Front end engineering; Chairman,
Metrorail Ltd, Monorail construction, mass transit developers using the latest electric rail technology; Bridges and Stratt Consulting ltd.
Seyi Oduntan has served in some other capacities in the private sector including: Former representative of Honeywell Group at the Franco Nigeria Chamber of Commerce and Industry; Former Representative of Honeywell Group at the Nigerian Netherlands Chamber of Commerce and Industry; Member, Association of Concerned Economists; Member, Business Club, Ikeja, Lagos; Council Member of the Abuja Chamber of Commerce; Member, Rotary Club of Ikeja; Member, Ikoyi Club; and Member, Lagos Country Club, Ikeja.
Seyi is also a well sought after public speaker due to his wit, intelligence, articulacy and delivery. He was installed as the Otunba Fuwajoye of Iworo Ijebu by the Current Oliworo of Iworo Alayeluwa Oba G.A Onafuwa in 2003.
Otunba Seyi Oduntan is happily married to Yeye Otunba Gbemisola and they are blessed with four grown up children
