YEYE OTUNBA OBALOJA OF IJEBU
Mrs Bosede Adebola Osibogun, by her name, was born on the Lord’s day, 16th September, 1956 at Abeokuta to the family of Late David Olatunde-Agbeja of blessed memory and Chief (Mrs.) Mariam Olatunde-Agbeja, both accomplished civil servants of their generation. Her father, David Olatunde-Agbeja was the son of a past Oloja of Ibodi Ijesa (now Oba of Ibodi Ijesa) who died on the throne in 1937.
Debola Osibogun’s mother, Chief (Mrs) Mariam Olatunde-Agbeja hails from Oke Eri in Ijebu. Her grandfather, Olunuga was the last born of Odusanya dynasty of Oke Eri. He was Birikisu Sungbo’s priest, a shrine adjacent to Ideyinbo (Odusanya’s farm) where no woman then dared pass by the gate. Sometime before 1900, young Olunuga through the European Missionary converted to Christianity and established the Wesleyan Church, Oke Eri, today known as Methodist Church of Nigeria, Oke Eri, Ijebu Diocese. His name became James Olunuga. Nuga’s three senior brothers died before him and he eventually became the Ololu of Idoyinbo (Odusanya heir apparent). He died in 1934. Debola Osibogun’s maternal grand mother was the daughter of Great Olamgbin Botoloye, Ojoye k’oye wun ni je of Irewon (Died 1931).
Debola Osibogun grew up in Ibadan in Oyo State. She attended Queen’s School, Ibadan from 1969 to 1973 for her O’ Level Certificate and went back to the same school from 1973 to 1975 in pursuit of Higher School Certificate. She proceeded to the premier University of Ibadan between 1975 and 1978 where she bagged a Bachelors Degree in Economics. She had a stint in the media sector during her Youth Corps service between 1978 and 1979 at Nigerian Television Authority, Ilorin where she worked as a Present/Editor News & Current Affairs.
After her Youth Corps, she joined the service of Cooperative Bank Ltd where she rose to become Senior Manager within 15 years. In between this period, the inspired and aspiring indefatigable Debola went back to school from 1987 to 1988 for a Masters Degree in Banking and Finance from the University of Ibadan. As a result of her diligence and efficiency she was seconded by the Bank to become Managing Director/CEO of Co-Op Savings & Loans Ltd for eleven good years from 1994 to 2015 after which she was seconded back to the bank as a General Manager. Upon the merger of Cooperative Bank Plc with other banks to form Skye Bank Plc, Debola was one of the very few that made it to the new organization. Due to her resilience and hard work Debola then become the Managing Director/CEO of Skye Trustees Ltd.
Debola Osibogun, a seasoned technocrat, is a rare woman who has succeeded in the male dominated financial sector with three decades of banking experience spanning core banking, mortgage banking and trusteeship; a combination of achievements very rare in the Nigerian financial sector. Debola Osibogun is the first female National President, Mortgage Bankers Association of Nigeria and the current Chairman, Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, Ibadan Branch. A banker extraordinaire of many years of cognate experience.
She is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (FCIB), an Associate Member, Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (ACTI) and Member, Nigerian Institute of Management (MNIM).
Yeye Otunba Debola Osibogun was appointed a Member of the Presidential Committee on Housing & Urban Development to draft a new Housing & Urban Development Policy for Nigeria by the former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo. She was also a Member of the President Committee of Mortgage Finance.
She sat on the Council of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria for several years and was also the Zonal Chairman, Association for Professional Woman Bankers, Oyo/Osun. She has attended several courses at home and abroad. Amongst these are INSEAD, Fontainebleau, France, 2008, NEP in Jerusalem 2005; World Congress on Housing Finance, Brussels, Belgium, 2004.
Debola is a recipient of many awards including – “Co-operative Achievement Award” 1998, in recognition of contributions to Co-operative Development in Nigeria; “Award of Excellence in the Building Industry” 1998; “Our Distinguished Queen”, given by Queens’ School Old Girls Association, 2001; “Oyo State Most Outstanding Women Corporate Chieftain Award” 2002; “Honourary Inner Wheel Member Award” July 2002; “Pilgrim of the New Millennium JERUSALEM PILGRIM (JP)” 2005, “Banker of the Year Award – Ibadan Anglican Diocesses”; “Pride to Corporate Women in Nigeria” 2007, given by National Forum of Heads of Federal Establishment, Oyo State Chapter.
Debola is a socialite with membership of the following clubs in her kitty; Ibadan Recreation Club, Ibadan Golf Club, Ibadan Polo Club and Resurrection Lilies of the Chapel of Resurrection, University of Ibadan.
Her hobbies include reading, basketball, polo, golf and meeting people.
